Camp
Kitchigami Staff
Introduction:
Camp
Kitchigami is a summer program serving kids ages 4-15. It has been
owned and operated by the Duluth Area Family YMCA since 1979. Kitchigami
offers programs designed to develop self-esteem, life-long skills, acceptance
of all people and an appreciate for the environment.
Your
child may participate in any or all of the following: swimming, kayaking,
canoeing, archery, art projects, outdoor living skills, nature activities,
fishing, hiking, sailing, team building, group games and
field trips to area State Parks.
The
Location:
Camp
takes place at Chester Bowl Park and is surrounded by towering pines,
a creek and pond perfect for canoeing and fishing, a large field for games
and countless hiking trails with scenic views of Lake Superior and stunning

Camp
Kitchigami is proud to be accredited by the American Camping Association.
This nationally recognized program focuses on program quality, health
and safety and requires us to review every facet of our operation. It
is a mark of distinction. The ACA logo is your assurance that this camp
is operated and committed to the highest standards established for the
camping industry.
The
Heart of the Kitchigami Experience...
The Amazing Staff:
The
true backbone of the Kitchigami program is the dedicated staff. Staff
are chosen for their proven abilities in working with children and
being positive role models. The staff all have a great love for working
with children in the outdoors. All staff are CPR and First Aid certified
and go through an intense, week-long training before the campers arrive.
It is our goal to provide fun and rewarding experiences where campers
can make new friends, learn new skills and enjoy being in the outdoors.
  
2008
SESSIONS:
One
and two week sessions run June 16-August 15. The program begins
at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m. Extended care is available from
7:30 a.m. until 5:15 p.m.
Traditional
Camps:
Kinder
Camp (ages 4-5): Designed for the first time or hesitant camper, Kinder
Camp serves as an outstanding progression point from the half day to the
full day camp. Kinder Camp hours are 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Campers need to be dropped off and picked up at Chester Bowl.
Explorers
(ages 6-8): Camp tradition begins here! Trying new activities,
gaining independence, learning new skills and making new friends are all
part of the Explorer experience. Campers participate in traditional
camp activities like canoeing, archery, art and outdoor living skills.
One and two week sessions available June 16-August

Pathfinders
(ages 9-12): Our older campers can experience a little bit extra
with our Pathfinder program. Campers still participate in the traditional
camp activities such as canoeing, archery and art, but also have the opportunity
to learn new skills like fishing and building camp fires. Pathfinders
will also take field trips on Tuesdays and Thursdays. One
and two week sessions available June 16-August 15
Specialty
Camps (ages 9-12):
Fishing
Camp: Don't
let this camp be "the one that got away!" While at Fishing Camp,
campers will learn fish identification, habitat, shore
fishing, touring the Great Lakes Aquarium and ending the week with a charter
fishing trip on Lake Superior.
Art
Power: Calling all artists and want to be artists! All
the fun of traditional camp plus the added bonus of in-depth art lessons.
Campers will participate in weaving, paper making, jewelry making, bead
design, and other creative expressions.
Outdoor
Adventure Camp: 
This
is the perfect week for the beginner outdoor enthusiast! During this adventurous
week, camp will partner with Positive Energy Outdoor (ed)Ventures to offer,
white water canoeing, indoor and outdoor climbing, kayaking on Lake Superior,
low ropes course, fishing and ending the week with an overnight at Jay
Cooke State Park.
Climbing
Camp: Campers
will spend the beginning of the week working on trust, self-reliance and
respect. Tuesday-Thursday will be with Positive Energy Outdoor (ed)Ventures
mastering skills in safety, knot tying, climbing techniques, belaying
and repelling. Friday will be spent on an outdoor climbing experience
at Ely’s Peak.
Beginner
Horseback Riding Camp: If you love horses, this is the week
for you! This camp is designed for the beginner rider. Campers
will learn horse safety, how to lead a horse, how to groom and saddle,control
the horse at a walk trot, and canter. The lessons will take place
in the mornings at Prospect Farms. The remainder of the day is filled
with traditional camp activities.
Intermediate
Horseback Riding Camp: Our intermediate Horseback Riding Program
is for campers who have attended our beginner program or who have past
experience horseback riding and are ready to take on a new challenge.

Advanced Horseback Riding Camp:
Our advanced Horseback Riding program is for campers who have attended
our Intermediate Program or who have past experience horseback riding
and are ready to expand their skills.
Alternative
Sports Camp: Tired of the same old
sport option? Alternative sports camp is for you. Alternative Sports Camp
will focus on some of the fastest growing alternative sports: Rugby, La
Crosse and Ultimate Frisbee. Area experts will facilitate the learning
sessions and games. Open to both male and female participants.

Project Earth: This program is geared for the camper who
wants to explore the outdoors and make a difference! Campers work together
as a team to address issues that affect our environment. Highlights include;
team-building initiatives, field trips, naturalists, service project,
and traditional camp activities. The leaders of tomorrow are at camp today!

Sailing Camp: Come sail away! This week on Lake Superior is a
well-rounded experience that emphasizes safety, fun and love of sailing.
During this week campers practice boating safety skills, boat preparation,
and become familiar with boating terminology. Campers are taught by professional
instructors and longtime sailing enthusiasts.

Music Camp: This is for the camper who is interested in
music and looking to find ways to take their interest further. They will
explore the magic of music in all forms. The wide range of activities
included ensures there will be something for everyone at all levels. Highlights
include: team-building initiatives, write camp songs, guest musicians,
explore musical instruments, and traditional camp activities.
Teen
Program (ages 12-15):
Leaders
in Training (ages 12-15): The YMCA as been recognized for generations
for its leadership development programs for young people. This two week
program is designed for youth who would like to further their leadership
skills and work as camp staff in the future. The first half of the program
will be spent focusing on leadership training, injury prevention, safety
skills, basic care, first aid and professionalism. LITs will also get
to do a low ropes course and whitewater kayaking. The second week is spent
applying their new skills with on the job training. LITs will also receive
an American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Certificate.
Camp
Kitchigami Also Includes:
•Family
Times: Includes dinner or lunch, songs, skits, a chance to try
some of the camp activities and meet your child's counselor. Family nights
run 6:00-7:30 pm on Thursday, June 26 2008 and Thursday, August 7 2008.
These family events are FREE.
•Transportation
and Extended Care: Camp Kitchigami provides Extended Care at
the Duluth YMCA before and after camp at no extra fee. Drop off time is
between 7:30-8:55 a.m. and pick up time is between 4:15-5:15 p.m. Transportation
is also provided at a number of different sites for your convenience.

Fee Assistance: The
YMCA offers two ways to help cover the cost of camp. Financial Assistance
is available to those who needit. Click

We also offer an “Earn Your Way to Camp” Candy Sale. Kick-off date is
Saturday, April 19th at the Duluth YMCA. Sale Days and Hours: Mondays
and Wednesdays 4:00-7:00 pm. Candy sites also available at the Superior
