What Activities Can Kids Do While Parents use the Physical Facilities?

YOUTH FACILITY POLICY

In order for the YMCA to provide a safe and positive experience and environment for youth, the guidelines below will be enforced. Please note that children with parents are welcome during all open hours except Adult Time which is Monday-Friday,11:30am-1:30pm.

Day Pass Users/ Non-Members:

·Children ages 0-11 who purchase a day pass can be in the facility under adult supervision (ages 18yrs or older), any time other than Adult Time. Children ages 11 and under need to have an adult present to purchase a day pass and that adult must stay with them in the facility.

·Youth ages 12-14 may purchase a day pass during Open Swim Hours only, no exceptions. Open Swim times are Wednesdays 6-9:30pm, Fridays 6-9:30pm, Saturdays 1-4:30pm and Sundays 1-4:30pm.

Youth ages 15-17 may purchase a day pass anytime other than Adult Time.

Duluth YMCA Members:

·Duluth YMCA members ages 0-11 must have a parent/adult with them in order to be in the facility. With an adult/parent, youth ages 0-11 can use the facility any time other than during Adult Time.

Duluth YMCA members ages 12 and older can use the facility any time other than Adult Time.

Kid's Club- Age 4 months- 9 years old.  Parents must be in the building.  Limit time to 2 1/2 hours.   

Open Swim, Open Gym and Racquetball- Hours varied.  Schedules can be picked up at the Member Service Desk. click here for the pool and gym schedules

Strength Training Cardiovascular Center (ages 12-17) Youth ages 12-14 must have written permission from their doctor and go through a youth orientation.  Youth age 15-17 must go through a youth orientation but don't need permission from their doctor.  Call 722-4745 ext. 133 to sign up for an orientation. All youth under 18 years, must be members in order to use the STCC.

YOUTH SPORTS:

Tae Kwon Do (ages 7+) A great family program! Improve yourself in body, mind and spirit. Classes will teach blocking, kicking and punching techniques emphasizing the traditional philosophy and discipline of Tae Kwon Do. Improve your confidence and ability to focus while relieving stress and learning self defense. All classes are family courses and families are encouraged to chose Tae Kwon Do as a great way to spend time together. Individuals are also welcome. Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing. For more information, call 722-4745 ext. 144

YMCA Northerns Swim Team (ages 5-18) At practice, team members are separated into ability levels and work on strokes and endurance.  Each swimmer will have many opportunities to compete in meets with other youth his or her age. The “DYN” is an “age group” swim team for boys and girls age 5 to 18. Here is a chance to become a part of the strong swimming tradition of the Duluth YMCA Northern swim Team. Through participation in this swimming program a child gains strength and endurance, is a part of team and makes new friends. There two seasons during the course of the year. The Fall Season starts in late September and lasts roughly 21 weeks, The Summer Season Starts in mid June and lasts about 10 weeks. You may also visit the DYN website at www.dynswimming.com

“Aerials” Gymnastic Team Gymnast doing a flip with help from coach.(Ages 6 and up) This competitive team consists of USA Gymnastics levels 4-8, with each level increasing in challenge. Placement is by invitation only. YMCA membership is required. 

AQUATICS PROGRAMS:

Infant Swim Program: Water Babies (6-18 Months) and Aqua Tots (18-36 Months) are designed to train parents to practice safety while introducing their children to the aquatic environment. These classes prepare the student for independence and participation in the Pre-School Classes. Children should attend with a parent or guardian. Please refer to the Program Guide for time and dates.

Pre-School Swim Lessons (ages 3-5) There are four levels of lessons: Pike, Eel, Ray, and Starfish. Classes are held in the main pool and develop comfort in the water and swimming skills. These classes are the child’s first experience without the parent so the class sizes are smaller for closer instructor attention. Please refer to the Program Guide for time and dates.

Youth Swim Lessons (ages 6 +) For children ages 6 and older, or those children that have completed the Pre-School Lesson Program. There are six levels of lessons: Polliwog, Guppy, Minnow, Fish, Flying Fish and Shark.  These lessons continue to develop students swimming ability, water comfort, and safety consciousness. Please refer to the Program Guide for time and dates.

Saturday Morning Swim Clinic (ages 3 and up) Kids are grouped by age, not by level.  We will work on 1or 2 aspects of swimming each time we meet.  Children will be spilt into small groups and will remain with that group the whole session.  We will work on the proper technique for swimming for each age group and ability.  Please refer to the Program Guide for time and dates.

Adaptive Swim Lessons (ages 5-14) Lessons for youth with physical disabilities led by an instructor and trained volunteers. Offered in conjunction with Courage Duluth.

Private Swim Lessons are held in 30-minute sessions and can be scheduled anytime throughout the year. Call 722-4745 ext. 131 to sign up.

GYMNASTICS CLASSES:

Preschool Gymnastics (Ages 3-5)- While this class does introduce parents and children to the sport, gymnastics is not our only focus. Children will participate in activitites helpful to developing a well-rounded athlete. Activities are designed to increase coordination, balance, flexibility and more.

Rollers - This is a beginner level gymnastics class. Participants will begin learning about the many aspects for the sport: balance, strength, coordination, flexibility, etc. In addition, they will use all pieces of apparatus. We seperate this class by age as our lesson plans reflect learning capabilities and age appropriate activities.

Rollers II- Ages 8and up. 

Swingers - As our classes reflect a progressive style program, we ask all children have some gymnastics experience and basic skills before registering for this class. At this level, basic skills will be perfected and more difficult skills introduced. Participants will have the opportunity to use all pieces of apparatus.

Ages 8 and up.

Tumblers/Pre-Team (Ages 5 and up)- Gymnast doing a hand stand. As our classes reflect a progressive style program, we ask all participants to master basic skills before registering for this class. Tumblers will complete USA gymnastics levels 1 and 2. Pre-Team will complete USA-Gymnastics level 3. Completion of each level is monitored by USA Gymnastics and our coaching staff.

Home School Physical Education Program 

This program is designed for home school students (ages 5-18) in need of physical education credits, as well as the opportunity to participate in individual and team sports.  The main areas of instruction include swimming lessons, team sports and individual sports. Other areas of physical fitness may be included.  For more information please call 722-4745, ext. 144.  

Preschool Gym and Swim

YMCA staff will interact with children for a half hour of fun, games and exploration in the gymnastics area. The children will then be taken down to the pool for a half hour of swimming lessons. Children get fun and variety for a full 70 minutes. That's enough time for you to get a workout too. For more information, please call 722-4745 ext. 144

School's Out at the YMCA

When school is not in session, the YMCA offers a full day of fun and educational programming for elementary aged youth. Programming begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. (extended care runs from 7:30 am-5:30 pm at no extra charge.) Children need to bring a lunch and swim suit.  There is a cap of 30 children per day. The schedule for this program corresponds with the ISD 709 school district's calendar.  Please refer to the Program Guide for registration information or call 722-4745 ext. 123.

School's Out: Before and After School Enrichment Programs

The YMCA hosts a five day a week before and after school enrichment program for elementary aged youth at Homecroft and Lakewood Elementary Schools. The YMCA also hosts an after school program at Lester Park Elementary which is held 5 days a week for 2 hours directly after school.  Our programs includes: snack, physical activity, arts and crafts, tutoring, and homework time.  Registration is limited to children attending these schools and fees are dependant upon the amount of days that the child attends.  Look for registration flyers to be distributed at the schools in September, or contact us for more information 722-4745 ext. 123 

Compass/21 Century Community Learning Centers

This five day a week after school enrichment program includes both family and academic support. These centers are located at Grant, Students doing an art project.Nettleton and Lowell elementary schools.  The program goals are to maintain school attendance and improve academic achievement of participating students in reading, math and life skills.  Program components include music, art, mentoring and other enrichment activities.  For more information, please call 722-4745 ext. 110

Five Points Tutoring Program

Five Points is a tutoring program working with students in grades 4-8. We match tutors with students to assist them academically at a school site. This can be either during school hours or in after school programs. A primary goal of Five Points is to encourage bonds between tutors and students that strengthen into mentoring relationships. American Red Cross Babysitter's Training

Ages 11-15: The American Red Cross Babysitter's Training prepares young people for many responsibilities associated with caring for infants and young children. This course provides injury prevention, safety skills, basic care, first aid, professionalism and an American Red Cross training certificate.

Birthday Parties

Have your Birthday at the YMCA!  Birthday parties are hosted by a wonderful staff person to lead the party.  We offer a decorated party room with cupcakes and pop... and of course a gift from the YMCA.  Different party options include a pool party, gymnastics party and gym party.  Your child can invite up to nine children.  (There is a fee for each additional child after that.)  YMCA members receive a discount on all parties!  For more information about cost, packages and scheduling your next birthday party, please contact 722-4745 ext. 100.
