What is the Community Bike Fleet?

The bike fleet was awarded to the YMCA in 2015 as a grant from the Minnesota Department of Transportation as part of a Safe Routes to School grant to promote the use of bicycles as transportation and to be a resource for bike education.

What is Included with the Fleet?

The fleet is housed in a 20’ foot trailer and includes the following equipment:

Qty. 4 – 20” Specialized mountain bikes

Qty. 12 – 24” Specialized mountain bikes

Qty. 4 – 26” hybrid comfort bikes

Qty. 20 – fully adjustable Bike Friday bikes suitable for youth and adults 4’ to 6’6” tall

Safety vests

Bike locks

Maintenance equipment such as a tire pump

Supplies needed for bicycle education, such as traffic cones, stop signs, and sidewalk chalk

Who Can Check out the Fleet?

The bike fleet is for use by schools or youth-serving organizations in our community. Teachers and organizations that are using the bike fleet to teach the Walk! Bike! Fun! Curriculum will have priority use of the fleet during the school year. During the summer, the fleet will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to organizations serving under-served populations. There are no time maximums for use of the fleet. For example, you may use it for a multi-week program, though it may need to be returned each week for use by other groups.

How do I Check Out the Fleet?

In order to use the bike fleet, someone from your organization must meet at least one of the following education/teaching qualifications:

  • Completion of a Walk! Bike! Fun! Curriculum training
  • Completion of a Traffic Skills 101 course
  • Certified League Cycling Instructor (through the League of American Bicyclists)
  • IMBA Level 1 certification

Additionally, you must provide proof of liability insurance. Visit bit.ly/BikeFleetCheckOut  to reserve the bike fleet.

In addition to the online resources listed below, there will be periodic training opportunities to help you utilize the bike fleet and implement the Walk! Bike! Fun! Curriculum. There are currently no trainings scheduled, but check back to this webpage often or email shawna@healthyduluth.org to sign up for email updates.
