At the Y, we are pleased to offer one-time opportunities for individuals or groups to do volunteer work together.  Whether you are an individual or a group of co-workers, friends or service club, we have something for you!

Official Spring Camp Miller Work Weekend
A day of FEEL GOOD labor.  In an effort to get camp ready for the summer season, we have an annual work weekend. Groups or individual volunteers are encouraged to spend time at camp assisting with facility and property projects.  There are never shortages of projects and maintenance needs including building, repairing, cleaning, gardening, organizing & painting.  We have something for everyone!  Join us for a fun day or two down at camp!  There is no minimum age to volunteer, however, we ask that youth under 12 have adult supervision.
When: Friday & Saturday May 14-15 (volunteers can come for one or two days)
Time: Work projects are available between 9am-5pm
Where: YMCA Camp Miller, Sturgeon Lake, MN Camp Miller is located about 45 minutes south of Duluth.

WORK PROJECTS AT CAMP MILLER
If the above Camp Miller work weekend date doesn't work for you, don't worry!  We can schedule another time for your group to help.  
When: We are very flexible and will find a time that works best for your group.

SIDEWALK SHUFFLE
On Wednesday July 7, the Y will be holding its annual Sidewalk Shuffle 5K run/walk to raise money for our Annual Campaign which raises funds for our financial assistance program.  We’re looking for volunteers to hand out water, track time, serve post-race snacks and cheer our racers on!

Packet Stuffing:
Date: Monday July 5 from 4:00-6:00pm

Packet Pick-Up:
Date: Tuesday July 6 from 4:00-6:00pm

5K Race:
Date: Wednesday July 7

Times: Volunteer are needed between 10:00am-2:00pm
Where?  The race takes place on the Lakewalk and the start and finish line is located at the Endion Station. 

Who can volunteer?  Really anyone!  This is a great event for youth groups or families to do together.  Note: Youth under age 11 must have an adult present.

CORPORATE OLYMPICS
This Olympic-style, co-ed team competition will include everything from dodgeball to an obstacle course.  Volunteers are needed to help with set-up, scorekeeping, run the challenge activities, serving refreshments and clean-up.  Since this is a fundraiser for the Annual Campaign, volunteering is a great way to contribute!

Volunteer Opportunities with Youth

Volunteers Needed for Summer Youth Baseball Program/Twin Ports Miracle League
The Miracle League is a program that provides youth ages 4-19 with disabilities, an opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league.  The Miracle League believes “Every Child Deserves a Chance to Play Baseball.”  Volunteers are mainly needed to serve as buddies for kids in the program.  Buddies assist Miracle League players so it could be anything from helping them at bat, get from base to base or even just cheering them on.  Other volunteer positions include: Pitcher, Catcher & Dugout Manager.  We’re also looking for two coaches.  Minimum age to volunteer is 8 (youth ages 8-10 must have an adult present).
Program Site: Miracle League Field (located in Harrison Park in West Duluth)
Days & Times: This program runs on Saturdays during the summer June 12-July 31.  There will be no games on July 3.  Games begin at 9:30am and will be over by 10:30am.  Volunteers don’t need to attend every Saturday but we do ask you commit to most of the games…we know people are busy in the summer!

Early Childhood Development Center
We’re looking for a volunteer to help us during our breakfast time!  Duties include: getting breakfast ready (no cooking experience necessary), delivering it to the classrooms, clean-up and dishes.  A great opportunity for someone who likes to be around small children! 
Location/Program Sites: The YMCA at the Essentia Wellness Center in Hermantown
Days & Times: This opportunity is available Monday-Friday between 8:00-9:30am 
Commitment: We ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of one day per week

Practice Your ASL While Assisting Others
From time to time, we have kids and adults who are deaf or hard of hearing, who would like to attend our programs.  We are in need of volunteers who have either conversational ASL skills or who are fluent in ASL, to interpret for our members and program participants in things like swimming lessons or gymnastics classes.  This is a great opportunity for future deaf educators, teachers in training, ASL students, and native ASL signers.
Qualifications: Volunteers need conversational American Sign Language skills. This typically means at least 3 quarters of ASL instruction, or equivalent experience.  Certification not required.  We're looking for people who are simply qualified.  
Commitment: Participants typically come to programs once a week for 30-60 minutes for six weeks at a time.  We will work with your schedule.

Camp Kitchigami Volunteer Counselors
Camp Kitchigami is a summer Day Camp program for kids ages 4-12.  Volunteers are needed to assist counselors with their camper group, set-up & take down of activities and assisting counselors with traditional camp activities (such as archery, hiking, art, nature activities and field games).  Minimum age to volunteer is 16.

Program Sites: Woodland Community Center or the Y at the Essentia Wellness Center in Hermantown
Days & Times: M-F from June 21-August 27.  Volunteer shifts are 9am-12pm or 9am-4pm. 
Commitment: Volunteers are able to sign-up for one day per week throughout the summer or for a full week at a time.

Customer Service/Miscellaneous Volunteer Opportunities

Photographer
We’re looking for either an amateur or professional photographer to take and edit pictures of our programs, events and facilities.  Help us capture the action and smiling faces to share on our marketing platforms and spread the word about what we do at the Y.  This opportunity has flexible hours and you can volunteer for as many or as few visits as you’d like.  A great opportunity to utilize your talents and give back to the Y.  Minimum age to volunteer is 18.

Building Services Volunteer: Maintenance
Do you like to tinker with and fix things?  Consider volunteering with our maintenance team!  We could use some extra assistance with things like changing light bulbs, cleaning vents & fans, changing filters, repairing equipment and more!

Days & Times: This opportunity has flexible hours and can be done whenever the Y is open.

Cleaning, Organizing and Work Project Volunteer
If you like to pop in a podcast and get down to work, this is the gig for you!  You can make a big difference at the Y.  You will help our staff interact with members and provide a safe and clean facility for all.  Duties may include things like wiping dust from surfaces, folding towels and organizing storage spaces.  Minimum age to volunteer is 12.

Sports and Rec Volunteer Opportunities

Youth Sports Volunteer Coach
Youth Sports at the Y are game-based programs that teach children (ages 4-18 years) the fundamentals and rules of an individual sport. The Y also incorporates character development into the program for each sport. Sport schedules rotate throughout the year and include sessions for the Miracle League Adaptive Baseball Program and Swim Team.  Minimum age to volunteer is 20.

Togetherhood (The Y's Volunteer Group)

TOGETHERHOOD is a member-led community service program that invites Y members to lead and participate in volunteer service projects that benefit the community where they live.  It is designed to be a simple, fun and rewarding way for members to identify ways they can give back and support their neighbors through their own ideas, skills and energy, and the network of the Y.  Minimum age to volunteer is 15.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED:

• Become a Committee Member-Are you looking to make a difference in your community and have ideas for service projects?  Commit to attend monthly meetings, share ideas for community service projects, help plan at least four service projects in a year, recruit volunteers.

• Be a Project Volunteer-Have you been looking for an easy way to give back to your community?  Become a project volunteer!  All you have to do is show up and give a little bit of your time and effort.  

• Become a Committee Chair-Would you like to lead a committee that is driving change in your community?  Commit to plan, attend and lead monthly meetings; recruit and orient committee members.  With Committee support, develop a calendar of projects that engage Y members.

 Partner Organization or Group-Do you have a project that could use Togetherhood volunteers?  Do you have something that a group of Y members and community participants could help with?  Become a partner with us and present at a Togetherhood meeting.
