BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) AND FIRST AID

The BLS and First Aid course, offered through the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI), is intended to assist healthcare providers, including professional rescuers, in learning or refining BLS skills for patients of all ages. These critical, potentially life-saving skills include performing high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (APR and automated external defibrillation (AED) as a single provider and part of a team. BLS also includes knowing how to relieve foreign body airway obstruction. This course is the equivalent of CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Basic First Aid information is included in this 2 year certification.

This is a blended learning course. A link will be emailed one week before the class session. Online pre-work must be completed BEFORE attending the in-person session.

BASIC CPR/AED AND FIRST AID

The Basic CPR/AED and First Aid course, offered through the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI), offers a 2 year certification. This class provides workplace and community training in performing CPR and using an AED. The goal of this skills-based training is to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond in a medical emergency.

This CPR/AED certification includes information about adults, children, and infants, and will fulfill a pediatric requirement. We are able to offer adult skills only, or adult/child skills only.

This First Aid certification DOES NOT meet the pediatric requirements for child care licensing. See the Pediatric and Adult CPR/AED and First Aid section for a class that will meet these requirements.

You may register for CPR/AED only (3 hours), or for CPR/AED and First Aid (4.5 hours). Basic First Aid may be offered as a stand-alone course by request only.

Upcoming opportunities: On demand only. Contact cpodtburg@duluthymca.org to set up a class.

PANDEMIC CONSIDERATIONS

CPR and First Aid classes have the highest standard for cleanliness and because of the level of safety and cleanliness we adhere to on a daily basis, few things have changed for us in the kind of precautions we take in classes with our manikins. However, the Red Cross and the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) have made some adjustments to the way we run CPR and First Aid classes to allow for extra safety precautions during the pandemic. We are primarily offering blended learning skills with scheduled skill practice sessions. Each student will have the opportunity to practice the skills on their own manikin. Sharing of equipment is avoided whenever possible, and careful documentation for the purpose of contract tracing is maintained.
